Hey Readers! I’ve been comin across some crazy stuff the past few days from a few different blogs around the web which I just had to share with you. Check em out below…

CIGS 2.0 with Applied Quantum Technology | The Science Office at …

Still 85% of the PV modules stem from crystalline silicon (First Solar, alone has 9% shares), the competition therefore is not between CIGS cell manufacturers but rather with the silicon technology. As the managers phrase it well: …

Stanford’s New Solar Cells Are The First to Produce Electricity …

Dont get me wrong, I do like to hear about the progress of solar cell technology and this is good to hear but I do not like how the constraints are not mentioned in this article. Are the materials cheap? What are some operational costs? …

Have a great day!

Have you been to a campsite with your RV, trailer or truck lately and tried to sleep when there’s somebody with a running generator next to you? It’s not easy. Even the “whisper quiet” generators, although much quieter than their full-noise brethren, are still louder than most people can stand when they’re trying to sleep in close quarters.

Consider this: Solar cell technology is now becoming economically much more viable than it ever was in the recent past. This is not only because the technology that goes into making a solar cell has become so much more lower cost, but because the government, in the latest economic stimulus bill of 2009, is now mandating more renewable energy sources be sold and used in the United States. What does this have to do with your RV you ask? Everything. Check out the benefits I get with my own RV solar panels on my little 1987 Autolite trailer:

POWER! The first and most obvious benefit is FREE, CLEAN electricity. You know how many cancer cases are reported in the US each year. You’ve seen the mounting evidence and the shows citing cancer as a number one killer. I personally believe that a good deal of this huge increase is due to the use of petroleum based fuels over the last few generations. When it comes to renewable energy and green energy, we as a nation and a world have grown seriously interested over the last few years. At first, personally, I didn’t care too much. Then I learned how to make my own RV solar panels that saved me $500 a year on gas. Not a bad deal, and it’s healthy for everybody to boot not to breathe all that exhaust.

No advance planning required! When you go on a trip to the woods, your camper or RV is charged up and ready to go, since it was likely out in the driveway yesterday where the sun was shining down on your brand new RV solar panels, making you power for free that was being stored in your batteries. With those technological advancements I mentioned earlier, even on cloudy days you can expect to get 50% of the output you’d get in sun from your panels.

The cells don’t need to be purchased brand new! There is now quite a blooming market for damaged and 2nd hand solar cells that manufacturers broke in the process of putting them in a frame. You can get these cells, along with a cheap mounting frame that’s available at Home Depot and most other hardware stores to make your own RV solar panels! These are a fraction of the cost of the same panels that you’d normally pay full price for. I outfitted my entire RV on a series of panels that cost me a grand total of $74 to make. Not bad when you consider that panels with the same electricity output would run upwards of $600 if I bought them new.

If you’re looking for a fun weekend project that will save you some money, here is a website that shows you what this business of building your own RV solar panels is all about.
