Silicon is the most commonly used semiconductor from which these cells are made. Typically, a modern solar cell measures 10 cm X 1o cm and is square-shaped. The cell is covered by an ARC or the anti-reflection<span id="more-101"></span> coating which reduces the quantity of the light that is lost to reflection at the cell&#8217;s surface.</p>

<p>Semiconductors are the special materials which make up a &#8220;Solar&#8221; or &#8220;Photovoltaic&#8221; cell of which the most common used is &#8220;Silicon&#8221;. When light source energies strike the cell(s) a part of the source is absorbed by the semiconductor material which loosens electrons allowing them to move freely.</p>
<p>Silicon is a poor conductor of electricity so further ingredients, such<span id="more-100"></span> as phosphorous and boron are added to the mix to create the &#8220;semiconductor&#8221;. Adding these ingredients allows the silicon to conduct electricity and also allows electrons freed by the light absorption to flow in a certain direction. Placing metal contacts on the top and bottom of the solar cell allows the current generated to be drawn of and used to perform work.</p>
<p>Monocrystalline/Polycrystalline Solar Collectors are modules consisting of an aluminium framed sheet of highly durable low reflective, tempered glass that has had individual solar cells adhered to the inner glass surface which are wired together in a series parallel configuration so as to obtain the necessary voltage and current.</p>
<p>Monocrystalline/Polycrystalline individual cells are wired in series strings to increase the module&#8217;s voltage and the series strings are wired in parallel to increase the current of the module. Glass or Tedler sheeting is used to protect the back of the cells and form the back of the module.</p>
<p>The parallel connections are brought through the back of the Monocrystalline/Polycrystalline protective sheeting and then connected to a weather proof junction box which is a permanent mount on the back of the Monocrystalline/Polycrystalline module. This junction box is where the output connections are made.</p>
<p>Several Monocrystalline/Polycrystalline solar modules wired together are what forms the solar panel/collector.</p>
<p>There are two types of solar cells &#8211; Monocrystalline &#038; Polycrystalline which are the technologies used today form solar panels.</p>
<p>Monocrystalline (single crystal) solar cells are cut from a silicon boule that is grown from a single crystal &#8211; this means the crystal has been grown in only one plane or direction. Monocrystalline are more expensive to manufacture and have a slightly higher efficiency than do the Polycrystalline cells which has the result of smaller individual cell and thus typically a slightly smaller module.</p>
<p>Polycrystalline solar cells are created from multicrystalline technology and are cut from silicon boule that has grown from multifaceted crystalline material &#8211; a crystal that has grown in multiple directions. Polycrystalline solar cells have slightly lower efficiency which results in a larger individual cell and therefore creates a larger module.</p>
<p>The advent of new silicon nitride Polycrystalline (multycrystalline) cells has made efficiency even higher than similar sized Monocrystalline (polycrystalline) cells.</p>
<p>It is always important to remember that 100 watt Monocrystalline/Polycrystalline module is a 100 watt module whether it is made from Monocrystalline cells or Polycrystalline cells.</p>

<p>Solar cell roofing made from solar shingles or solar panels is being  increasingly incorporated into the construction of new residential and commercial buildings.  In many areas, people are choosing to replace their conventional roof with a solar roof when it is time for maintenance.  And most of these people would tell you that the long-term value, or short-term increase is resale interest, made it worthwhile.</p>
<p>A solar cell roof is called &#8220;building integrated&#8221;, also known by the more complete name &#8220;building integrated photovoltaic&#8221; (BIPV).  BIPV suggests that you would have needed that part of the structure built anyway, and you&#8217;ve chosen to use material that will also serve the purpose of generating power through solar energy.  The first advantage of solar cell shingles or panels on the roof is obvious: some of the initial cost is paid by lowering the overall material and labor costs involved in the construction.  The second advantage is that the BIPV does not stand out &#8211; it is a normal and expected part of the design and structure of the building.  These two advantages often make bipv solar roofing the clear choice over rooftop wind turbines, raised solar panels, and backyard windmills which both stand out and cost a lot more to build and install.</p>
<p>In some parts of the world, often due to government subsidies, many new houses are built with solar roofs.  Until recently, this was not the case in the U.S., UK, and much of Europe because the cost remained prohibitive.   However, with the invention of what is called &#8220;thin film solar technology&#8221;, solar roofing tiles, panels and shingles have become easier to fabricate and work with and are much more aesthetically pleasing.  This technology is best for pitched roofs where shingles or small tiles are the norm.  Large flat roofs, such as the tops of many commercial buildings, can have one giant layer of solar film, or large integrated panels.</p>
<p>Solar cell roofs can be hooked up in two ways &#8211; on and off the grid.  Off the grid solar power means that you will use the energy you gain from the solar panels and either not be connected at all to the electric company or connected in a way that is completely parallel and unrelated.  Off grid appliactions might be appropriate for houses that are far from electric power lines but get enough sunlight to be completely solar, houses with combination systems with other renewable energy systems, or houses in places that get little sun so it would be unlikely that the solar power generated would ever be more than the house requires.  On grid systems are hooked in with your conventional electric supply, and when the solar power system generates more electricity than you need, it actually sells it back to the power company.  Your meter literally spins backwards and you can get a zero bill or even a check in the mail instead of a bill.</p>
<p>There is some debate among real estate developers, but the general rule is that any renewable energy source for the home pays off if it returns your original installation investment in ten years or less through energy savings.  The invention and perfection of integrated thin film solar roofs has led to us rapidly approaching that return, and possibly even outdistancing it depending on where you live.</p>
<p>There are four things to consider when looking into a solar cell roof:</p>
<p>1. How much sun does your area get each year, independent of the outside temperature?</p>
<p>2. Where does your roof face &#8211; ideally it would face east/west of it is a slanted roof?</p>
<p>3. What is the cost now, and projected cost of electricity where you are?</p>
<p>4. What is the general attitude of home buyers in your area to renewables (especially if you might sell your home within 10 years)?</p>
<p>If you do choose solar cell roofing for your home or buisiness you will likely be pleasantly surprised at the effeiciency, cost, and savings associated with BIPV.</p>

<p>The U.S. National Renewable Energy Laboratory lived up to its name earlier this year by creating the world&#8217;s most efficient solar cell. The gallium-indium cell boasts a confirmed efficiency of 40.8%. You might read this and think &#8220;That&#8217;s terrible&#8221;, but that&#8217;s just because you don&#8217;t really understand how efficiency works.</p>
<p>Let us tell you a little bit about factors involved with energy efficiency. Every singe energy transaction in existence loses juice to friction, heat, and its surroundings. Your body, for example, is about five per cent efficient. For every twenty thousand calories your pull in you barely use one thousand for actually &#8220;moving around and staying alive.&#8221; The rest is used up in all the en-route steps of chemical processes or poured out of your flesh in the form of heat &#8211; and then you have to use more energy to sweat and get rid of it.</p>
<p>How about plants, the worlds ultimate solar collectors. Appalling! All the organic energy on the planet comes via green plants in one way or another and their chlorophyll-chemical conversion barely scores six-point-six percent efficiency. If you scored six-point-six on a test, you&#8217;d be fairly unimpressed. And that&#8217;s only counting the actual energy-harvesting chlorophyll reaction itself &#8211; take into account the rest of the plant required to soak up the sun and the efficiency falls to less than a per cent. Hundreds of millions of years to hone systems dedicated to harvesting the sun and nothing else, and the best nature can manage is less than a percent &#8211; those man-made solar panels are beginning to look better already, aren&#8217;t they?</p>
<p>In fact, they&#8217;re among the best things we&#8217;re even able to build. Think of the ultimate in designed systems: the car engine. Beloved of entire cultures and they&#8217;ve been around for almost a century, with thousands of engineers honing and refining the system in peace, war and spare time besides.</p>
<p>Thirty-seven per cent. And that&#8217;s the IDEAL efficiency &#8211; the absolute maximum efficiency that could be extracted if God turned off friction, MacGyver built the camshaft and Haphaestus himself provided perfect metals to construct it with. Real engines only score a twenty per cent conversion of the possible gas power &#8211; and solar panels have already beaten what the ultimate engine in a Heaven-bound cadillac could ever achieve.</p>
<p>So yes, 40.8 is good. Very good.</p>

<p>The Energy And Climate Problems Of The World &#8211; How To Solve Them?</p>
<p>The world has an energy problem. The supply of the main source of energy, the oil, is gradually running out. The use of oil, coal and other fossil energy sources is polluting the planet with greenhouse gasses that are capturing heat from the sun rays in a dangerous degree. </p>
<p></p>
<p>But also most alternative energy sources give problems for the environment. Some of them take up vast areas of land, like bio-diesel production, extensive solar cell plants and wind mills. Bio-diesel production can also take up large cropland and cause a chronic hunger catastrophe.</p>
<p>Others, like nuclear power stations can accidently destroy the environment of vast areas and potentially kill millions of people. Also leakage from deposits of nuclear waste can give the same effect. But nuclear power is very clean if everything goes well. </p>
<p>As it seems, there is no easy or elegant political or technical solution to the problem. The problem must be challenged with a clever combination of several means.</p>
<p>An important module in the solution is energy economization. Where it is possible one must use engines, technology and logistics that utilize the energy as effectively as possible. One must also stop using energy on activities that do not result in any added comfort, do not give gain of any sort, or give only marginal resulted value. By using the energy sources more effectively, the World&#8217;s energy need will perhaps drop by so much as 30%.<br />
Then the use of oil and coal must be replaced with all kinds of alternative energy sources, but no alternative must be used in such an extend or such a way that it cause new problems.</p>
<p>One part of the solution is using bio diesel or bio-fuel made of waste from croplands. In the process of converting the waste to fuel, the content of minerals in the waste can probably also be extracted and sold as fertilizers. But it is unethical to grow crop just for making bio-fuel, since that can cause food shortage and rise of food prizes.</p>
<p>Use of solar energy to make electricity will be a great part of the solution. Theoretically every roof and outer wall in the world can be covered by solar cell panels, even though it will not be estheticly or practica<br />

lly possible to go so far. Wastelands that have little other value can also be used to mount large solar cell plants. There is however a limit on how much solar cell panels you can mount before the environment is disturbed.</p>
<p>Much more electricity can be produced by wind-mills that today, but there is a limit on the number and extent of wild-mill parks you can set up before the environment is heavily disturbed. In areas like Denmark and Northern Germany the disturbing effects can already be seen clearly.</p>
<p>In many areas the waves in the sea or the stream of tide water can be used to produce electricity in a commercially economical fashion, but again there is a limit on how far you can go in building wave or tidal power plants before you destroy the environment. </p>
<p>The wind can also be used more directly, as it were in former periods. Sails can be mounted on large ships, especially on large cargo carriers. However, the sail rigs will probably look quite differently than those of the old vessels, and be operated automatically by computers.</p>
<p>Many countries have special natural energy resources that lend themselves to easily exploitation. Geothermal energy is one of these. Iceland is extensively using geothermal heat directly or to produce electricity. This technology can probably be extended for use in areas where the geothermal heat is somewhat more hidden, but still relative close to the surface.</p>
<p>Hydroelectric power plants using the natural fall of water from high to low areas have long been a major source of electric energy, and many of the existing plants can be made more efficient. To some extend new plants can also be built, but there is a limit also on this technology before the impact on the environment gets too heavy.</p>
<p>Unfortunately it is not possible to avoid using more nuclear power than today if the energy crisis shall be solved. There are however new developments in this area that makes nuclear power less dangerous. Scientists are right now developing a new type of reactors that will use thorium as a fuel and that will be work subcritically. The reactions in these reactors cannot go out of control. The waste also will cease to radiate after some hundred years, and not many thousand, so the storing of waste will be less problematic. But still there will be waste that must be handled safely.</p>
<p>Most alternative energy sources produce electricity, but it is not always practical to use the electricity directly. It is however possible to use the electricity to produce hydrogen, and the hydrogen can then be used as a clean fuel in applications where electricity does not fit.</p>
<p>In the long run, use of fusion power will probably be the permanent solution. But commercial fusion plant will probably still not be available in the next forty years.There is however a joker that might show up to be salvage of the world&#8217;s energy problem, namely cold fusion. This seem to be a real phenomenon, and not a misunderstanding as many thought and still thinks. But one does still not know if this phenomenon can be used practically to produce useful energy.</p>

<p>With solar power becoming more and more popular in today&#8217;s society, scientists are racing to find new ways to make the conversion of solar light into usable energy cheaper to manufacture and more efficient.</p>
<p>Currently solar panels are made by cutting crystalline silicon into really small disks less than a centimeter thick. These small thin disks are meticulously polished and treated to repair any damage caused by the cutting process. After polishing, metal conductors and dopants (materials added to alter the electrical charge in the photovoltaic solar cell) are spread across each disk. The disks are arranged in a grid-like pattern on the top of the solar panel. The panel is then covered with a protective sheet of thin glass that is bonded to the panel. It is then bonded to a base material with a very expensive thermal cement. The cement is needed to help channel excess heat away from the panel, so as to not overheat the cells. Although, these panels work, they are not as efficient as most researchers would like. They are also fairly expensive and still have a tendency to over-heat.</p>
<p>David Ginger, an associate professor of chemistry at the University of Washington and his team of researchers think they may have found the answer. They found a way to create images of super tiny bubbles and channels (apoximately 10,000 times smaller than a human hair ) inside organic plastic solar cells. It turns out that if the plastic polymers are spread thin and baked, the bubbles and channels will form as a natural consequence of the heating process. The intensity and duration o the heat affects the configuration of the bubbles. The configuration or the bubbles dictates the efficiency of the solar cell.</p>
<p>Paul Berger, professor of electrical and computer engineering and professor of physics at Ohio State has been expanding on the use of plastic polymers to capture and convert solar light into efficient energy. Berger and his team found that adding tiny silver nanoparticles to the plastic polymers increased the efficiency of the solar panels (electrical current generated per square centimeter) increased by almost 12%. &#8220;The small silver particles help the polymer capture a wider range of wavelengths of sunlight than would normally be possible, which in turn increases the current output,&#8221; Berger explained.</p>
<p>Meanwhile, Brian Korgel, a chemical engineer at the University of Texas is working on a solar &#8220;ink&#8221;. These nanoparticle solar inks can be printed on a plastic substrate or on stainless steel. Conceivably, they could be painted directly onto roofs or the sides of buildings. Korgel and his team are hoping that this technology can cut the cost of production of solar cells to 1/10th of what it is today!</p>

<p>Some engineers at Oregon State University have discovered a way to use an old way of life to create one of the most innovative production technologies for solar energy systems that can be surprisingly simple to build compared to existing solar cells based on silicon.</p>
<p>These small forms of marine unicellular life existed for at least 100 million years, and much of ocean life depends on them, directly or indirectly for their livelihoods. But in addition, diatoms have hard shells that can be used to create structures in a natural way to an extremely small scale, something with great potential for nanotechnology.</p>
<p>Biology rather than using conventional methods of production of semiconductors, researchers at Oregon State University and Portland State University have created a new form of solar cell type DSSC (dye-based), in which photons bounce as if on a machine to play Pinball (Flipper) or automatic pool, beating these pigments and producing electricity. The new technology developed can now be more expensive than some existing methods for manufacturing solar cells DSSC, but could lead to triple the electricity produced.</p>
<p>Most of the existing solar cell technology based on silicon and is reaching the limits of what can be done with it. &#8220;There is a great opportunity to develop different types of solar energy technology and is likely to eventually find a use several forms, depending on the situation,&#8221; says Greg rorro, professor of chemical engineering at Oregon State University.</p>
<p>The fundamental difference between the new method of manufacturing solar cells and the above procedures DSSC lies in the steps necessary to manufacture these devices, and the potential improvements it offers.</p>
<p>The new system is based on living diatoms, and especially in the shells of these unicellular algae. These shells have a kind of nano-structure that is suitable for the manufacture of solar cells DSSC. The first step is to let the algae are placed in a transparent surface conductive glass, and then withdrew the living organic material, leaving only small skeletons of diatoms to form a template.</p>
<p>Then using a biological agent to precipitate soluble titanium in very tiny nanoparticles of titanium dioxide, creating a thin film that acts the same way as did the semiconductor solar DSSC. The steps that would have been laborious and difficult to perform with conventional methods, are carried out very easily through these natural biological systems, using simple and inexpensive.</p>
