Solar power the future of Generating Energy for the Home

Solar electricity for home homes is nothing new. It has just been banished to the background in lieu of rising cost of property ; more recent more advanced building materials, design and the limitation of resources. Since man started building houses, sunlight played a major influence in the design. In fact, even in the more complicated urban planning methodology of the ancient Chinese and Greeks, the orientation of the buildings is as much as practical directed towards where it could capture the most daylight.

The ancients might not be as intellectually sophisticated then to utilize slogans as passive solar & thermal mass but when they build, they were building in compact proportion, employing overhangs, producing insulations & building in manners that direct the airflow within the structure & manufacturing well lit, well ventilated spaces using the relative position of the sun to the orientation of their structures. Recently, as the conventional sources of power became costlier, householders were once more turning to the sun for energy requirements.

Since the 1950′s, harnessing the sun’s rays has been developing and today the solar cell technology has achieved very efficient levels that modern ( supposed green house ) designs apply the sun’s power to provide energy for the home. While solar power is free, the device that will convert it to run our appliances isn’t. To provide solar electricity for the home, solar cells called photovoltaic made of semi-conducting materials, are grouped into modules. These solar cells are mounted on tops of roofs, yards or open spaces where it can encapsulate the maximum quantity of sunlight.

When possible, the panels will be installed facing south to get the maximum out of the daylight but tracking systems are also used to follow the direction of the sun. The solar panels collect the
1000
energy from the sunlight. The method fundamentally is that when the panels are exposed to daylight, the electrons are separated form the atoms. This movement of the electrons creates electricity.

To store power, pumps are often used – circulating water in the cells. The water goes inside a storage tank where the power is stored, ready for use. Every so often, the utilization of gravity is employed if it’ll just the same store the heated water in to the tank. In spite of all of the development in solar energy though, the utilization of this technology is not enough to provide power to the entire house. The best method so far can only satisfy about 80% of a homes power wishes. The utilize of solar electricity for the home will still require the employment of the typical power distribution methodology.

Powering the houses by solar means will still, for a while be amplified by a local power distribution agency. To many, this is already a great kick off point. Homeowners that feel that the high value of powering their houses through solar energy, is justified when put next to the price that is now being paid for conventional electrification method where horrendous amounts of CO2 are getting dropped into the atmosphere simply to make} a pitiful quantity of electricity.

However, due in part to the increasing costs of energy, the equipment for solar energy has been undergoing fast phases of growth. Experts are confident that inside 5 years, powering the home through the solar strategy will be made widely available for those that like it as its sole energy source.

This is all the information I have on this subject for the time being. I hope it was what you were searching for. Perhaps you might benefit from reading a different article about this issue. The U.S. National Renewable Energy Laboratory lived up to its name earlier this year by creating the world’s most efficient solar cell. The gallium-indium cell boasts a confirmed efficiency of 40.8%. You might read this and think “That’s terrible”, but that’s just because you don’t really understand how efficiency works.

Let us tell you a little bit about factors involved with energy efficiency. Every singe energy transaction in existence loses juice to friction, heat, and its surroundings. Your body, for example, is about five per cent efficient. For every twenty thousand calories your pull in you barely use one thousand for actually “moving around and staying alive.” The rest is used up in all the en-route steps of chemical processes or poured out of your flesh in the form of heat – and then you have to use more energy to sweat and get rid of it.

How about plants, the worlds ultimate solar collectors. Appalling! All the organic energy on the planet comes via green plants in one way or another and their chlorophyll-chemical conversion barely scores six-point-six percent efficiency. If you scored six-point-six on a test, you’d be fairly unimpressed. And that’s only counting the actual energy-harvesting chlorophyll reaction itself – take into account the rest of the plant required to soak up the sun and the efficiency falls to less than a per cent. Hundreds of millions of years to hone systems dedicated to harvesting the sun and nothing else, and the best nature can manage is less than a percent – those man-made solar panels are beginning to look better already, aren’t they?

In fact, they’re among the best things we’re even able to build. Think of the ultimate in designed systems: the car engine. Beloved of entire cultures and they’ve been around for almost a century, with thousands of engineers honing and refining the system in peace, war and spare time besides.

Thirty-seven per cent. And that’s the IDEAL efficiency – the absolute maximum efficiency that could be extracted if God turned off friction, MacGyver built the camshaft and Haphaestus himself provided perfect metals to construct it with. Real engines only score a twenty per cent conversion of the possible gas power – and solar panels have already beaten what the ultimate engine in a Heaven-bound cadillac could ever achieve.

So yes, 40.8 is good. Very good.

Solar Power Design From Mit

New solar power design research conducted at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) could lead to higher powered, more affordable solar panels.

With the help of computer simulations and various advanced chip-manufacturing methods, a team of physicists and engineers at MIT have discovered new ways of getting greater efficiency from photovoltaic solar cells.

In the experiment, the team applied an anti-reflective coating to the front, and a innovative series of multi-layered reflective coatings and a defraction grating – a closely spaced array of lines – to the back of ultra-thin silicon films to increase the cells’ power by up to 50%.

With the help of the carefully designed layers on the back of each cell, light is bounced around longer inside the thin silicon film, allowing it more time to transfer its energy into an electric current.  Without those coatings the light would be reflected straight out of the cell.

One of the team members, Peter Bermel, a post-doctoral researcher in MIT’s physics department explained that it is critical that any light entering the layer should travel through a long path in the silicon.  But what they have not figured out yet is how long that path has to be to ensure maximum absorption of electrons to produce the electric current.

The test was started by running thousands of computer simulations, testing variations of the thickness of the silicon,  spacing of the lines, and the amount and thickness of reflective layers on the back. These simulations were then used to optimize efficiency and power output.

According to Lionel Kimerling, the project manager and Thomas Lord Professor of Materials Science and Engineering: “The simulated performance was remarkably better than any other structure, promising, for 2-micrometer-thick films, a 50 percent efficiency increase in conversion of sunlight to electricity.”

Once simulations were complete, they were confirmed by actual lab-scale tests, where graduate student Lirong Zeng was given required to refine the structure and make the silicon cell.  As predicted, the experiment was a success and sparked considerable industry interest.

The work done so far was just the first step toward manufacturing an affordable, improved solar cell. Now all that is needed is so
1000
me fine-tuning through more simulations and lab tests, and more work on the materials and manufacturing process.

According to Kimberling, if the solar business stays strong, we can expect this new technology to be ready within the next three years. Bermel added that, “the potential for savings is great, since the high-quality silicon crystal substrates used in conventional solar cells represent about half the cost, and the thin films in this version use only about 1 percent as much silicon.”

To evaluate its business potential, the project was selected by the MIT Deshpande Center for an “i-team” study. Here it was concluded that this thin film solar cell technology could provide considerable benefits in both manufacturing and electricity production, for uses ranging from remote off-grid to dedicated clean energy.

While no single project is likely to minimize the cost of solar cells, this type of innovation takes us one step closer to making solar power design competitive with fossil fuel and nuclear grid electricity.

Home Solar Power

The Radiant Energy emitted by the Sun is the greatest source of energy that the earth has. The only problem has been our inability to harness this energy since it is not a concentrated source of energy. But since the earth is constantly being engulfed in it, man has attempted to tap into this source of essentially free energy. With the development of Solar Cell Technology, and the evolution of Solar Cell Technology that has occurred over the last 30 or so years homeowners can now tap into this vast energy resource saving themselves money while reducing their Carbon Footprint.

Photovoltaic Technology

The creation of the Solar Cell made it possible for us to tap into the enormous amounts of solar energy that the Sun emits to produce electricity. Initially Solar Cells which were Selenium based were not very efficient but hinted to the possibilities of the technology if better materials could be found. When Silicon Solar Cells made their debut, the viability of converting Light into electricity now became a useful but expensive means for generating electricity from light. In the early days of Silicon based Solar Cells the efficiency of Solar Cells was about 10 percent. With the advent of Amorphous and Polymorphic Solar Cells efficiencies are now close to 41%.

How Do Solar Cells Work

Let us first define what a Solar Cell is. Electricity can be created by generators, chemicals, heating of dissimilar metals and by direct conversion of Sunlight. The Silicon Solar Cell is an electronic device that uses two types of Silicon to produce electricity strikes the material. This is possible because Photovoltaic Cells take advantage of the Particle Nature Of Light. Light has two properties Waves & Particles and the particle nature of light which is called the Photon the excitation element of a Solar Cell.

As Photons strike the Silicon Material current flows producing electricity; without getting to technical I’ll explain the conversion process that takes place when light strikes a Solar Cell.

A Silicon Solar Cell is not pure Silicon, Pure Silicon is a poor conductor of electricity as a result impurities are added (referred to as doping) to allow for the free movement of electrons which results in current flow. When these impurities are added
1000
to the Silicon extra electrons are added to the material that are easily knocked loose by Photons hitting the Silicon.

Now as many may know for there to be current flow, you need an anode and cathode. This is accomplished in a Silicon Solar Cell by doping some Silicon with N-Type material like Phosphorus and P-Type material like Boron.

When the P and N doped materials are in close proximity we now have a circuit that will generate electricity when a Photon strikes the Solar Cell. By combining lots of Solar Cells in parallel and series we are able to create an array of Solar Cells that will produce the voltage and current that you require to power your electrical devices.

Since we can stack many Solar Cells together we can develop Solar Panels of any size to generate enough power to supply the electricity needs of a home. Though Solar Panels at one time were very expensive and beyond the reach of homeowners; over the last ten years prices for Solar Cell panels have dropped dramatically. Thus making it affordable for homeowners to use them to generate electricity for their homes.

Better yet for those that like to do things themselves you can assemble your own Solar Panels and save a bundle while seeing a faster return on your investment. For instance a Do-It-Yourself individual can assemble a Solar Panel for about $200 which saves you a few thousand over a commercial Solar Panel.

For homeowners who want to invest in Green Technologies like Solar & Wind the Federal and Local Government offers Tax Credits and Subsidies. This means that an investment in Green Technology puts money in your pocket, ups your homes value and reduces your dependence on polluting Fossil Fuels the Polluting Fossil Fuels that are responsible for Global Warming.

Final Thoughts
Solar Energy, our most plentiful renewable energy is non polluting unlike the current mix of Carbon Based Fossil Fuels and is available to us for as long as the Sun continues to shine. Fossil Fuels on the other hand are obtained from deposits laid down millions of years ago are a finite resource that won’t last forever.

As the technology continues to improves and Solar Cell efficiencies continue increase the cost of implementing Solar Energy Technology will drop even more than they are today. This can not be said of Fossil Fuels; if 2008 is an example of what’s to come Fossil Fuels will become more expensive as demand for them increases and their availability becomes scarce.

Positional Cloning Approach Expedites Gene Hunts

For most scientists, searching for a disease gene means years of laboring over the mapping, cloning, and sequencing processes and considerably less time actually studying the gene and its function.

But this should soon change. A new approach called “positional candidate” is rapidly coming of age and should streamline the process of identifying disease genes within the next few years.

Based on the growing body of genome resources, the positional candidate strategy lets researchers combine information about a gene’s chromosomal location with increasingly detailed genetic and physical maps, allowing for easier identification of a potential causative gene.

According to the latest data, positional candidate studies already have led to the identification of over 50 disease genes. Commenting recently in Nature Genetics, NIH National Center for Human Genome Research Director Francis Collins stated that this more efficient approach is a major reason that positional cloning is moving from the “perditional to traditional” way of finding disease genes.
Strategy Saves Time

One of the most intriguing uses of the positional candidate strategy is the recent identification of the gene causing achondroplasia (ACH), a common form of dwarfism.

The ACH gene story began in 1991 during the marathon race for the gene responsible for Huntington’s disease. That year, a group at the University of California, Irvine, reported that it had isolated an interesting cDNA that mapped to the middle of the chromosome 4 subregion possibly containing the Huntington’s gene.

This was exciting news. The group, led by John Wasmuth, and other members of the Huntington’s Disease Collaborative Research Group had spent nearly 8 years stalking the Huntington’s gene in an initiative that Science once described as “a nightmare of false leads, confounding data, and backbreaking work.”

The backbreaking work went on. Later studies failed to show that the gene, called FGFR3, played any role in Huntington’s. Having already deposited the nucleotide sequence for FGFR3 in GenBank ™, Wasmuth’s group continued to search along the tip of chromosome 4.

The Irvine scientists did not realize it at the time, but this work with the FGFR3 gene would give them a head start later in the hunt for the gene involved in ACH.

1000
/>
Last year, three laboratories reported that linkage studies had localized the ACH gene to a 2.5-Mb stretch on the tip of chromosome 4, the region where the FGFR3 gene resides. This time, investigators had no need to construct clones of the DNA region or design complex disequilibrium studies. With the sequenced FGFR3 gene as their candidate, they acquired patient DNA samples and developed PCR primers to test for possible mutations.

Within a matter of weeks, the Irvine scientists got their answer: 15 of 16 people with ACH had the same point mutation in the FGFR3 gene.
Positional Candidate Strategy Becoming Widely Used

The positional candidate approach relies on a three-step process that saves time and effort: (1) localizing a disease gene to a chromosomal subregion, generally by using traditional linkage analysis; (2) searching databases for an attractive candidate gene within that subregion; and (3) testing the candidate gene for disease-causing mutations.

Not so long ago, accessing a database of mapped genes seemed as futuristic as boarding the Starship Enterprise. With the tremendous progress in mapping human and mouse genomes and improving gene-discovery techniques, the positional candidate strategy already has amassed an impressive list of gene discoveries.

Since 1990, scientists have used this approach to find genes implicated in such conditions as Marfan syndrome, inherited nonpolyposis colon cancer, retinitis pigmentosa, long QT syndrome, Jackson-Weiss syndrome, Crouzon syndrome, Alzheimer’s disease, and several others. As impressive as this list is, recent international mapping initiatives promise to put many more human genes on the map during the next few years and make positional candidate investigations even more successful.

In February of this year, Washington University and the pharmaceutical company Merck, Sharpe, and Dohme announced the first publicly available installment of 15,000 ESTs. Launched last summer, this ambitious effort is expected to process about 200,000 cDNAs over the next 18 months. Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory is arraying clones from a cDNA library generated at Columbia University.

Meanwhile, an international EST consortium is being coordinated at the Sanger Centre. It includes the Stanford University Genome Center, Wellcome Trust Centre for Human Genetics, Genethon, Washington University, University of Cambridge, and Whitehead Institute Massachusetts Institute of Technology. These groups joined forces to begin mapping 70,000 ESTs to 0.5-Mb intervals or better. To help speed this important initiative along, The Institute of Genomic Research donated primers for 15,000 ESTs.
Looking to the Future

Still, several challenges remain before positional candidate strategies become firmly entrenched. One concern is the need for a more comprehensive database of mapped genes. Although well over 4000 genes have been mapped, tens of thousands more must be identified to fill in blanks in the human genome.

At the same time, standard positional cloning efforts usually result in candidate intervals of 0.5 to 5 Mb, but mapping cDNAs to traditional somatic cell hybrids or by using FISH usually will not achieve this degree of resolution. Large-insert clone libraries or radiation hybrids may be needed to provide the necessary resolution.

Despite these challenges, both of which are now being addressed successfully, most experts are encouraged by the short-term success of positional candidate studies. “With all the cDNA activity alone, it seems likely that more than half the human transcripts will be placed on the human genome map in the next 18 months,” predicted Collins. “The effect on the success rate of the positional candidate approach should be profound.”

So do you want to know about the thin film solar panel? I understand how a lot of people want to use solar energy to power their homes. Solar panels are a viable solar energy source, both environmentally and economically.

I am a green person myself; I use solar systems to power my own home. And guess what?

I was able to save a lot of money on my electricity bill, and so can you!

Now let me ask you a question- You all know the traditional thick panels, right?

Of course, you do. Most of you have seen these on many roof tops.

Get this- Thin film solar panels are the newer, thinner type of panel that has the potential to make solar energy much more affordable.

Thin panel versus thick panel

The main reason why solar units have not been widely affordable in the past is because thick panels are made of expensive materials, and they cost much to manufacture.

On the other hand, thin panels are made of much cheaper materials, and the cost of production is almost 3 times less than that of the first generation of panels, which means that they are much more affordable.

Thin film also means that the solar cell is smaller, lighter weight, and more flexible than traditional cells. Thin systems pack more wattage in less space.

Unlike thick panels that need a steel structure to hold them in place, thin film solar panels can be integrated into the roof or wall itself.

Warning: Thin film panels are very practical to use, there are small portable solar units that can be carried with you anywhere you go.

With new thin film solar panels the price of solar systems is coming down!

You can see available thin panels on the market by clicking here

You can still buy the components from your local hardware and do it yourself.

How may the Solar System effect our lives in the future?

Earth is part of the Solar System. It provides everything that allows us to exist. That isn't expected to change until the Sun begins its expansion to a red giant in about 1.1 billion years.

“When the Sun does begin to bloat up, it will go quickly, sweeping through the inner Solar System in just 5 million years. It will then enter its relatively brief (130 million year) helium-burning phase. It will expand past the orbit of Mercury, and then Venus. By the time it approaches the Earth, it will be losing 4.9 x 1020 tonnes of mass every year (8% the mass of the Earth).
But the habitable zone will be gone much sooner. Astronomers estimate that will expand past the Earth's orbit in just a billion years. The heating Sun will evaporate the Earth's oceans away, and then solar radiation will blast away the hydrogen from the water. The Earth will never have oceans again. It will eventually become molten again.
One interesting side benefit for the Solar System. Even though the Earth, at a mere 1.5 astronomical units, will no longer be within the Sun's habitable zone, much of the Solar System will be. The new habitable zone will stretch from 49.4 AU to 71.4 AU, well into the Kuiper Belt. The formerly icy worlds will melt, and liquid water will be present beyond the orbit of Pluto. Perhaps Eris will be the new homeworld.”

Is Solar Energy really feasible in future both technologically and economically?

There's been brouhaha over Renewable energy now a days that rides on top of depleting fossil fuel and climate change. What is the likelihood of Solar energy becoming a proven reality where every other country with average solar insolation producing at least 25% of energy needs from Solar?

Solar Power Information.

In 1839 a French physicist named Alexandre Edmond Becquerel was experimenting with metal electrodes and electrolyte when he discovered the phenomenon of ‘photovoltaic effect’. He had found that conductance rises with illumination. Then in 1876 Willoughby Smith found that a junction between selenium and platinumproduced a photovoltaic effect when illuminated.

Then in 1877 Charles Fritts put the two processes together to make the world’s first selenium solar cell. The cell had a conversion efficiency of about 1% and selenium is hard to find so it is expensive. These two things, plus the fact that it was 1877, and electric can openers had not been invented yet; prevented the further development of the cell for a power supply.

Today photovoltaic cells are mostly made of semiconductors such as silicon.Basically the theory works like this. Light strikes the cell. A portion of it is absorbed within the semiconductor material. This means that the energy of the absorbed light is transferred to the semiconductor. The energy knocks electrons loose, allowing them to flow freely. And due to the electric field with in the cell the electrons can only flow in one direction. This flow of electrons is electrical current.

But the mathematical equations behind the photovoltaic effect can be quite over whelming, but you don’t have to be a scientist in order to utilize todays photovoltaic cells. And with today’s technology higher conversion efficiencies can be achieved and this makes them practical to use for a power supply.

With the improvements made in recent years, solar power can supplement the power that is received from the grid and reduce your energy bill. While it is not sufficient to power a large appliance like a stove, or an air conditioner; smaller appliances will be able to utilize it. Or if you like, you could become completely independent from the grid with a combination of solar, wind and battery power.

What did thales use to predict a solar eclipse?

Thales lived around 600 BC, so the historical details are hazy; not only is it not known how he predicted the eclipse, it is not even known with certainty whether he made this prediction!

Therefore, we can only speculate. There are various cycles of eclipses, and some of these were known to the ancient Babylonians. The most famous eclipse cycle is the “Saros”, which has a period of 223 lunations (i.e., counting 223 new moons following one solar eclipse). This is about 18 years and 11 days.

If you see a solar eclipse, there will be very similar solar eclipse 223 moons later, but the next eclipse will be shifted about a third of the way around the world to the west (so you may or may not see it). This pattern isn't obvious at first, but a society that keeps careful records of eclipses for many decades will probably eventually discover the Saros cycle.

(This isn't quite as hard as it sounds. If you watch the sky carefully, you'll see that solar eclipses happen only at the new moon, and eclipses occur only during “eclipse seasons” that occur about every six months. Therefore, an ancient astronomer didn't have to be on the lookout for eclipses every day, but only on a few special days each year.)

Example: The longest total solar eclipse of the twentieth century occurred on July 11, 1991 (over Hawaii and Baja California). If you count 223 new moons later, you get July 22, 2009. This is the date of the longest eclipse of the twenty-first century, and it occurs over China. This is 18 years and 11 days after the Baja eclipse. Add another 18 years and 11 days, and you get to August 2, 2027; this is the date of a total solar eclipse over north Africa.

If Thales knew about this cycle and had access to records of past eclipses, he could have predicted a future solar eclipse.

It does not appear, however, that the Greeks of this era had a general method for predicting eclipses. Did Thales get information from an astronomer in the Middle East? Nobody knows.

Solar energy on earth is 100000 times the earth's electrical capacity. Why is this difficult to harness? ?

Do you personally know an easy way to turn solar radiation into electricity? If so, your patent could be worth trillions. We have technology to do it now, but it is not very efficient and rather expensive.

It's very difficult in general to convert energy from one form to another; even the tried and true fossil fuels only run at about 30% efficiency at best.

Introduction To Solar Power

Solar energy or solar power is the conversion of sunlight directly into electricity. One way to convert sunlight into electricity is with a solar cell using the photoelectric effect or by focusing the sun’s energy to heat or boil water which is then used to generate power. An example of a photovoltaic application is to power the calculator also any other small and medium-sized objects such as the solar cell to off-grid homes.

Solar power is not readily available at all times but we’re able to predict to a certain degree of accuracy when it will or will not available. Thus, solar power is generally combined with other energy sources to ensure continuous power. On a larger scale for combined power energy you will see the usage of solar power generation using wind, biomass and solar power to obtain renewable energy.

Due to the vast technologies readily available in the market there are many ingenious solar powered devices out there. If you think you have seen it all, well, they are many left to be discovered. One for such is the solar powered water bottle. What is it you ask? This unbreakable 1 L drinking bottle unlike its counterparts has a built in long lasting light-emitting diode (LED) in its lid. Apart from the water resistant solar panel, it also includes a battery pack. It is able to recharge the nickel-cadmium batteries and can last up for hundreds of cycle on just a few hours charge in sunlight. Basically what it does is to store solar power and convert it to light on top of being your water bottle. The moment you set it in the sun during the day you’ll have ample of light supply all night long. You just have to fill it up with your favourite drink and do not need to worry of locating it in the dark ever again. This well-engineered product is extremely environmentally friendly and will make life better and easier.

If you think that’s about it, think again. Long gone are the good old fashion security cameras, nowadays you can find motion sensor and wireless outdoor security camera powered by sunlight. Some of these surveillance devices actually detect when there is a movement at certain proximity otherwise; it will just remain on standby mode in order to conserve energy. The system is designed to operate 24 hours a day, 365 days a year! Due to its functionality for
1000
outdoor remote video monitoring, they are engineered to withstand the most severe environments. If you are looking for an energy saving security gadget, this should be the one for you.

In this day and age, you can find solar powered motorcycles, automobiles and aircrafts, and knowing the advancement of technology it surely won’t stop there. There are plenty of solar powered items and too many to list them all here so if you are interested to find out more you can search for them online. There are websites which teach you how to create solar powered devices from scratch. Not only are you doing your part for the environment it is also fun to start on a mini science project.

Radiation and the sun in the near future ( worried ) ?

My best friend just told me that radiation is supposed to be really bad in the near future, and that it may kill us. She said her moms friend told her mom that radiation has happened before in the past in Africa, where people in africa had to live underground for 3 months, that radiation was so bad, and one of her friends that was an old women died because she went out in the open.
She said that certain parts of the sun is supposed to be blowing up and the radiation is supposed to be bad….should i believe it ? what about the solar storms in the near future such as 2011 / 2012/ 2013 ? please help…should i be worried ? thanks
